The Grand Strand stretches along 60 miles of coastline from Horry County’s northern border at Little River southward into Georgetown County’s Pawleys Island.
Horry County has numerous population centers that are currently unincorporated, ranging from Little River, a quaint fishing village, to Carolina Forest, an 11,000-acre development located between Conway and the Intracoastal Waterway that will likely become a city as more and more families move into the area, to Garden City Beach, a family-oriented coastal retreat. These unincorporated areas operate under the auspices of Horry County with the county seat of Conway, located inland from the beaches on the Waccamaw River. Visit the county’s website at www.horrycounty.org for an overview.
The Georgetown County seat of government is in the city of Georgetown, South Carolina’s third oldest city. Georgetown’s coastal communities of Murrells Inlet and Litchfield Beach are unincorporated.

Property Taxes
Both Horry County and Georgetown County levy property tax in mills with one mill being equal to a thousandth of a dollar. Residents also pay school taxes and residents in incorporated cities and towns pay the county rate plus their municipal rate. Tax amounts are based on the assessed fair market value of the property times the assessment ratio (4% for owner-occupied homes; 6% for second homes) times the millage rate.
